Clemson Escapes Furman In 11 Innings, 7-6

Box Score

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Seth Beer lined a two-out RBI single down the left field line to score Chase Pinder in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Clemson a 7-6 victory over Furman in baseball action Wednesday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Beer's game winning hit came after Pinder and Eli White drew one-out walks and Pinder advanced to third on Chris Okey's deep fly to left center field.  After falling behind no balls and two strikes to Paladin reliever Jake Crawford, Beer lined the next pitch down the left field line to score Pinder easily from third base.

Trailing 6-5 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers needed a wild pitch to score the tying run and force extra innings.  Okey stroked a two-out double to left center field and moved to third on a Beer strikeout that required a throw to first base to complete.  Paladin reliever Nolan Mullen then walked Reed Rohlman on four pitches, the last of which skidded past catcher Andrew MacLatchie, allowing Okey to race home and tie the game at 6-6.

Furman trailed 5-1 before rallying to take a 6-5 lead in the eighth.

The Paladins cut it to 5-3 in the seventh on a Matt Towarnicky two-run single, and tallied three more in the eighth, Carter Grote scoring a Sky Overton bounding double down the left field line, and Jake Crawford and Overton coming home on a Jordan Simpson two-run single.

The Tigers used a pair of walks, a hit batsman, a balk, and a wild pitch to help grab a 2-0 lead in the second on a Pinder two-run single.

Trailing 4-0, Furman got on the board with a run in the fifth with a Deon Sanders infield single that plated Simpson.  The Paladins loaded the bases with one out, but failed to convert after Towarnicky's line drive was speared by Tigers' shortstop Eli White and Jabari Richards popped out.

Clemson got the run back in the fifth on Jordan Greene's two-out, solo home run to left field to go up 5-1.

The Paladins out-hit Clemson 9-6, Simpson leading the way with a 2-for-5 performance with two RBI and two runs.  Sanders went 2-for-4.

Pinder paced Clemson, going 2-for-5 with two RBI.  He also scored two of the Tigers' runs.  Jordan Greene crossed the plate three times, scoring twice following walks and on his first home run of the season.

Beer, who entered the game hit .419, was just 1-for-6 at the plate, but his only hit provided the game winning run.

Alex Eubanks (4-4) worked the final three innings to earn the victory while the loss was charged to Crawford (0-4), who surrendered a run and two walks over the final 1 2/3 innings.
