Fifth-Ranked Clemson Blanks Furman, 8-0

Box Score

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Weston Jackson homered twice and Tyler Jackson pitched 6 2/3 innings of scoreless ball to lead nationally fifth-ranked Clemson to a 8-0 shutout of Furman in Tuesday evening baseball action at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The win was the seventh straight for Clemson (21-4) while Furman (11-12) suffered its fifth shutout of the season.

Jackson, a graduate transfer from Presbyterian College, went 3-for-5 and combined his two round trippers with a double to finish with five RBI.  He put Clemson on the board with an RBI double in the second, belted a solo home run in the sixth for a 3-0 lead, and blew the game open for the Tigers in the seventh with a three-run shot into the left field stands to extend Clemson's advantage to 7-0.

Seth Beer also homered and doubled in a 2-for-4 performance for the Tigers.

Jabari Richards had two of Furman's five hits, and Brandon Elmy extended his hitting streak to nine games with a double.

The solid run support backed up a quality start by Tyler Jackson, another graduate transfer from USC Upstate, who struck out four and walked only one before exiting in the seventh.

Furman's best scoring opportunity came in the second after Jason Costa and Jabari Richards delivered singles and advanced on a sacrifice bunt.  Jackson struck out Dylan Love for the second out and retired Jake Crawford on a grounder to third base to end the inning.

The Paladins put two more runners on in sixth but Jackson escaped by striking out Richards swinging to end the inning.

Furman starting pitcher Nik Verbeke (0-2) was charged with the loss, yielding two runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings of work  — his longest of the season in only his second start.  He walked three and struck out four.

The Paladins play host to Mercer this weekend in Southern Conference action beginning with Friday's 6:00 p.m. contest at Latham Stadium.
