Furman Falls To 11th-Ranked Clemson, 12-4

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Chris Williams belted a three-run fifth inning home run and drove in a career high six runs to power 11th-ranked Clemson past Furman, 12-4, in baseball action Tuesday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The win improved Clemson's record to 4-0 on the season while the loss was the first of the campaign for Furman, which is 3-1.

With the score tied 1-1 in the fifth, Clemson's Seth Beer singled and Patrick Cromwell followed with a walk to bring Williams to the plate.  Facing Paladin pitcher Nik Verbeke, Williams drilled a 2-2 pitch over the right center field fence to give Clemson a 4-1 lead.  The Tigers finished off the inning with a Bryce Teodosio RBI single to score Robert Jolly for a 5-1 advantage.

Clemson made it 7-1 an inning later with a pair of two-out RBI hits from Jolly and Drew Donathan and tacked on five more in the seventh, highlighted by a Chris Williams two-run double and pinch-hit two-run home run by Justin Hawkins.

Furman tallied a pair of runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to complete the scoring.

The Tigers out-hit Furman 13-6 with Cromwell's 3-for-4 performance leading the way. The top five hitters in Clemson's lineup combined to go 8-for-16, score eight runs, and drive in seven.

Jabari Richards and Jason Costa combined for four of Furman's six hits, with Costa droving in two of the Paladins' three runs with an RBI double in the fourth inning to tie it at 1-1 and a run scoring single in the eighth.

The win was credited to Ryan Miller (1-0), who threw three inning of shutout, no-hit ball in relief of starting pitcher Sam Weatherly.

Nik Verbeke (1-1) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs in only 1/3 inning of work, surrendering two hits and three walks.
