College Of Charleston Plays Long Ball In 15-6 Win Over Furman

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Danny Wondrack homered twice and drove in five runs and the College of Charleston hit five home runs to beat Furman, 15-6, in Wednesday baseball action at wind-swept Latham Stadium.

The win improved College of Charleston to 16-6 on the season while the loss dropped Furman to 13-8.

The Cougars took advantage of a stiff wind blowing out to left field to jump out to an 8-2 second inning lead, getting a three-run home run from Logan McRae in the first inning and a Wondrack grand slam in the second that chased Paladin starting pitcher Trent Alley.

Furman cut the lead to 8-4 before Tommy Richter cracked a solo home run in the fifth, and an inning later Wondrack hit his second round tripper of the contest, a solo shot to left field that gave CofC a 10-4 advantage.

The Paladins tallied twice in the sixth to make it 10-6, but the College of Charleston answered with a Bradley Dixon two-run home run in the seventh, two more in the eighth, and one in the ninth.

The Cougars finished with 15 hits, led by Dixon's 3-for-5 (2 RBI, 3 runs) performance.  Luke Morgan also had three hits and scored three runs, and Wondrack went 2-for-5 and drove in five.  McRae's three-run first inning clout was part of his three-run, four RBI worksheet at the plate.

Furman had 13 hits but none left the yard.  Landon Kay (3-for-4) and Jason Costa (3-for-5) paced the Paladins along with Sims Griffith, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Alley (2-1) absorbed the brunt of CofC's early barrage, lasting just 1 1/3 innings and allowing seven hits, eight runs, and a walk in taking the loss.

CofC starting pitcher Austin George worked three innings before leaving with an 8-2 lead.  His replacement, Justin Baker (1-0) was credited with the win, allowing five hits, four runs, three earned, in two innings of work.  He struck out two.

Paladin freshman right-hander Jordan Beatson pitched effectively in relief, allowing two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.  He walked two and struck out three..

Furman opens a three-game series at Wichita State on Friday, with first pitch at Eck Stadium set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
