Huebner, Furman Top USC Upstate In 10 Innings, 5-4

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Bret Huebner steered an RBI single just inside the first base bag to score Jordan Starkes from third base to give Furman a 5-4, 10-inning victory over USC Upstate in Tuesday night baseball action at Latham Stadium.

The victory, the fourth in the last five outings for Furman (16-24), completed the Paladins' two-game season sweep against the Spartans (17-22).

Huebner's game winning hit was set up by a Logan Taplett's leadoff double down the right field line.  Starkes, who pinch-ran for Taplett, advanced to third base on a passed ball before coming home on Huebner's game winning hit on a two-ball, two-strike pitch by Spartan reliever Will Wheeler.

The walk-off victory was the fifth of the season for the Paladins — all at home.

USC Upstate took a 4-3 lead in the ninth after Furman reliever Eric Taylor walked the bases loaded, and his younger brother, Spartan sophomore Jeff Taylor, scored from third with two outs when Huebner mishandled a two-out ground ball off the bat of Stone Stephenson.

Furman tied in the ninth against Wheeler when Jabari Richards drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a Trent Alley sacrifice fly.

Hank Nichols (1-0), who retired the Spartans in order in the top of the 10th, earned the victory, his first as a Paladin.

Wheeler (4-3) was charged with the loss.

USC Upstate took a 1-0 lead in the third against Paladin starting pitcher Jordan Beaston on a Taylor ground-rule, RBI double.

Furman quickly tied it up in the bottom of the frame when Jared Mihalik clubbed a solo home run, his second of the season, down the left field line.

The Spartans finished the game with 10 hits while the Paladins registered nine, getting a pair of hits from both Taplett and Banks Griffith.

Beatson pitched well, surrendering three runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season.  He walked two and struck out three.

Furman plays host to Georgia State on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
