Kansas Tops Furman In Series Opener, 11-7

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Brett Vosik belted a grand slam and Nolan Metcalf went 5-for-5 to highlight a 17-hit attack that propelled Kansas past Furman, 11-7, in the baseball series opener Friday evening at Latham Stadium.

Vosik's third inning grand slam erased a 1-0 Furman lead and helped the Jayhawks (21-19) build an 8-3 lead through five frames.

The Paladins (17-25) got a run in the sixth and cut the lead to 8-7 in the seventh on a three-run double by Logan Taplett, but Kansas answered a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to secure the victory.

Skyler Messinger went 4-for-4 and scored three runs in the Jayhawks' big offensive performance.

Taplett, who also belted his fifth home run of the season, a two-run home in the fourth, drove in five of Furman's seven runs.  The Paladins finished with nine hits.

Kansas starter Ryan Zeferjahn (4-2) survived Furman's comeback attempt to collect the victory, through he was tagged for six runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.  He walked three and struck out nine.

Vosik's grand slam came at the expense of Paladin starter John Michael Bertrand (3-3), who yielded eight runs on 12 hits over five innings.  He walked four and fanned one.

Paladin pitching tied a season high with nine walks.

The two teams play game two of the series Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
