Furman's Jay Jackson Earns Call-Up To Milwaukee Brewers

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Former Furman baseball pitching standout Jay Jackson has been called up to Milwaukee Brewers, the club announced Monday afternoon.

Jackson, a right-hander who had his Triple A minor league contract purchased by the Brewers, joined the major league team today and will wear jersey number 25 for tonight's 7:40 p.m. ET home game versus Colorado.

Jackson, who made his major league debut in 2015 with the San Diego Padres, where he appeared in six games in relief, spent the last three years in Japan pitching for the Hiroshima Carp, making 175 appearances and posting a 10-8 record with a 2.19 ERA.  He was signed by the Brewers in February and took part in the spring training.  He made seven appearances with the Brewers' Triple A affiliate San Antonio Missions, where he went 1-0 with three saves and a 0.00 ERA, registering 14 strikeouts while surrendering just four hits and two walks over 8 2/3 innings.

A product of Taylors, S.C., and Greenville's Christ Church Episcopal School, Jackson, 31, a first team All-Southern Conference performer who pitched for Furman from 2006-08, was the ninth player in Furman history to play in the major leagues.

In his final (junior) season with the Paladins he registered a 9-2 record with a 3.17 earned run average in helping lead Furman to a 33-24 overall record and 17-10 third place SoCon finish.  He also played outfield, batting .336 with eight home runs and team leading 41 RBI in 2008.

A ninth round selection of the Chicago Cubs in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, his professional career spans eight-plus years in the minor leagues, including stops with the Cubs, Marlins, Pirates, Brewers (twice), and Padres' farm systems, making 245 appearances and totaling 866 1/3 innings on the mound.
