Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Zack Budzik cracked a walk-off two-out, two-run home run in 13th inning to beat Furman, 11-9, in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Budzik's game winning blast down the left field line capped a late game rally for the Spartans (19-10, 4-4 SoCon), who trailed 9-5 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning before rallying to tie the game with a pair of two-run home runs by Caleb Webster and Hogan Windish off Paladin reliever Jordan Beatson.
UNCG didn't put a runner on base in extra innings against Paladin reliever Eric Taylor until the Ryan Caveness drew a leadoff walk in the 13th. Nik Verbeke took over for Taylor and recorded two outs before serving up Budzik's game winning blast.
Taylor (0-1) took the loss despite hurling 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief. He walked one and struck out three.
Furman (11-19, 4-4 SoCon) appeared to be in solid shape to collect the victory after building a 9-2, sixth inning lead.
A David Webel two-run double highlighted a seven-hit, five-run Paladin second inning.
Jabari Richards' two-run home run in the third made it 7-1, and the Paladins led 9-2 after plating two runs in the sixth. That would do it for Furman' scoring, however, as the Paladins were held scoreless for the next seven frames while UNCG rallied, starting their comeback with a three-run sixth.
Furman put a pair of base runners on in both the 10th and 11 innings against Spartans closer Chad Sykes, but couldn't take advantage.
The Paladins stranded 13 base runners in the contest and struck out 16 times.
Richards, John Michael Boswel, and Trent Alley led Furman with three hits apiece.
Sunday's series finale is set for 1:00 p.m.
