GREENVILLE, S.C. -- For the second year in a row, Furman's Katarina Kozarov won the women's singles final and a Paladin duo took the title in the women's doubles championship at the fourth annual Furman ITA Summer Circuit, which featured 160 players competing in Greenville last weekend. Furman's Jake Munns led the Paladin men, taking the championship in the singles final.
The win marked the third ITA Summer Circuit victory for the Paladin women this summer, as Julia Adams picked up the win at Louisville and Carol Elizabeth Kerman claimed the title at Elon.
The 2018 and 2019 Southern Conference Player of the Year, Kozarov, a rising senior from Novi Sad, Serbia, defeated players from Wofford and Chattanooga before beating Nicole Stephens of Michigan State, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8, in the quarterfinals. She notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sarah Merrill to reach the finals, where she defeated Furman teammate Adams, 6-4, 4-6, 14-12, for the title.
The 2019 SoCon Freshman of the Year, Adams, a native of Knoxville, Tenn., beat Meredith Roberts of Mississippi State, 6-3, 2-1 (ret.) in the opening round before downing Fiorella Bolona, 6-2, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, Adams topped Furman's Kerman, 6-4, 6-3, and defeated Elise Mills of South Carolina, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5, to reach the finals.
Rising sophomore Madison Dillon of Hilton Head, S.C., scored a 3-6, 6-0, 10-7 victory over Vanessa Streng of Northwestern in the opening round, and Kerman defeated Appalachian State's Katherine Earnhardt, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7, in the round of 16. Furman signees Maggie Pate and MaryAnn Rompf also tallied first round victories in the main singles draw.
Dillon and Kozarov teamed up in doubles, defeating Wake Forest's Alexis Franco and Peyton Pesavento in the finals.
"This weekend was another exciting and successful ITA Summer Circuit," said Furman head women's tennis coach Adam Herendeen. "We are fortunate to have one of the biggest events in the country, and this year's field was very strong which makes it even more exciting to see our Furman players claiming the top men's and women's draws."
On the men's side, rising senior Jake Munns of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, defeated James Roelofse, a rising sophomore for the Paladins from Cape Town, South Africa, 5-7, 6-3, 12-10, in the singles final. Munns notched victories over players from Coker and Loyola then defeated Aarush Ganji, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the finals. Roelofse defeated Jon Brann Reid, 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals.
Munns teamed with Kerim Hyatt of Chattanooga to win the men's doubles title, 8-3, over Roelofse and Furman incoming freshman Chad Nash.
