GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman blanked Gardner-Webb, 4-0, Saturday in the Paladins home opener at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. Â
The Paladins won two of three doubles matches to claim the first point. Seniors Jake Munns and Jake Bhangdia, who rank tenth nationally, held off Ross Gilbert and Breno Plentz, 6-4, in the top-seeded contest, and junior Drew Singerman and senior Clarke Wilson defeated Alex Griffiths and Stefano Puga, 6-3, at number three. The flight two contest was unfinished, with Connor Enslin and Sebastian Harris leading junior Ivan Mitric and sophomore James Roelofse, 4-3.
Furman picked up singles wins at flights one, three, and four for the team victory. Munns bested Plentz, 6-4, 6-1, at flight one, and Bhangdia blew past Victor Putter, 6-1, 6-1, at number three. At flight four, Singerman topped Griffiths, 6-2, 6-1. Â
The match at flight two was unfinished. Mitric won set one, 7-5, and Gilbert was leading 2-1 in the second set when the match ended. Matches at flights five and six were not played.
Furman (1-3) will entertain Winthrop Sunday at noon at the Mickel Tennis Center. The Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 0-1 with the loss.Â
