Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Jeff Taylor homered, tripled, and drove in five runs to power USC Upstate to a 13-2 win over Furman in an eight-inning baseball game that was halted due to fog Tuesday afternoon at soggy Harley Park.
The Spartans (3-1) wasted no time in taking command, roughing up Paladin freshman starter
Dylan Matela for five first inning runs, highlighted by a two-run home by Taylor that cleared the wall in right field.
Matela, who failed to record an out in the first before getting lifted, gave way to
Jordan Beatson, who checked the Spartans until the fourth when Taylor launched an RBI triple off the right field wall and scored on a Cameron McIntosh single to make it 7-0.
USC Upstate blew it open with five more runs in the fifth on the strength of five hits and a pair of Furman errors.
McIntosh paced the Spartans' 17-hit attack with a 4-for-5, three-RBI performance and Taylor finished with three hits, as did Mason Stewart.
Furman, which had just five hits in the contest, avoided the shutout with RBI singles by
David Webel and
Banks Griffith in the eighth.
The win went to Upstate starter Kyle Schmitt (1-0), who worked four shutout innings of two-hit ball. He struck out three.
Matela (0-1) was charged with the loss after yielding five runs on five hits and a walk in the first inning.
Furman plays at Clemson on Wednesday.
