Furman Knocks Off No. 16 Wake Forest, 5-2; Herendeen Earns 100th Win At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman knocked off No. 16 Wake Forest, 5-2, Sunday in women's tennis action at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C., recording a victory over the highest ranked opponent in program history.  The win marked head coach Adam Herendeen's 100th victory at the helm of the Paladin program, giving him a 100-34 record during his six seasons at Furman.

The Paladins claimed two of three doubles victories to win the opening point.  Senior Katarina Kozarov and junior Julia Adams, who rank 27th nationally, defeated Brooke Killingsworth and Anna Brylin, 6-2, at flight one, then the Demon Deacons evened the slate when Eliza Omirou and Peyton Pesavento beat senior Georgie Walker and freshman Ellie Schoppe, 6-3, at flight three.  In the decisive flight two contest, junior Madison Dillon and senior MaryAnn Rompf held on for a 7-5 advantage over Anna Campana and Casie Wooten to take the point.

Furman won four out of six singles matches for the victory.  Kozarov, who ranks 15th nationally, held off 21st-ranked Campana, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, at flight one, and Adams came from behind to beat Killingsworth, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) at flight two.  Rompf outlasted 98th-ranked Omirou, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, at number four, and Schoppe topped Wooten, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) at flight six.

Wake Forest scored at flights three and six.  Brylin downed Dillon, 6-3, 6-2, at number three, and Pesavento recorded a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-5) advantage over sophomore Maggie Pate at number five.

"This has been a big time weekend for our team, and I could not be more proud of them," said Herendeen.  "We have a lot of respect for Wake Forest and how strong they have been in recent years and, even with the long trip back from Alabama last night, our team came out ready to go from the very start of the match!  We lost some close matches earlier in the season, and those really helped us today as we closed this one out against such a good team."

Furman (3-4) will travel to Columbia Wednesday to take on South Carolina at 3 p.m.
