GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Two Furman doubles teams placed third and the Paladins picked up several singles wins Saturday in the second day of the 36th annual Debbie Southern Fall Classic, which is being held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
At flight three doubles, freshman Maeve Thorton and junior Grace Thomas defeated Alexandra Vecic and Gracie Epps of Georgia, 8-6, in the consolation match on the winners' side of the draw, while sophomore Ellie Schulson teamed with freshman Macy Hitchcock to down Ohio State's Luciana Perry and Dani Schoenly, 8-7(5), in the same spot in the flight four draw.
In singles action, junior Sara Snyder topped Mississippi State's Maria Rizzolo, 7-5, 7-5, at flight four, and Schulson handed Alessia Cau of Ohio State a 6-0, 6-4 loss at flight five. Junior Marissa Pennings won by default at flight six then beat Schoenly of Ohio State, 6-4, 6-4, in an extra match. At flight ten, junior Alexa Griffith posted a 7-6(4), 6-2 advantage over Megan Basil of Ohio State.
Nine of the 14 teams competing in this weekend's tournament were ranked in the top 33 in the 2023 final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings: Georgia (2), N.C. State (4), Ohio State (10),Tennessee (14), Duke (11), Auburn (17), Georgia Tech (20), Wake Forest (27), and South Carolina (33). Also, Clemson finished the season ranked 45th, Alabama was 62nd, and Indiana concluded 2023 in 68th place. Besides the Paladins, Mississippi State completes the field.
