Birmingham, Ala. – Furman claimed a total of four event titles Tuesday during the final day of the 2024 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Samford's Shauna Yelton Field at The Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
Seniors
Dylan Schubert and
Cameron Ponder captured the men's 1,500- and 5,000-meters, respectively, while senior
Megan Marvin won the women's 800-meters and junior
Sierra Bower the women's 5,000-meters.
The Paladin men posted a third-place finish at the SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the first time since 2021, compiling 100 points. The women's team registered 92 total points for a fifth-place performance for the fifth consecutive time.
In total, Furman tallied eight individual championships over the two-day event.
"I thought both programs had a great meet," said Furman head coach
Robert Gary. "It feels like it's been a while since the men finished third. We did a good job of sweeping the distance events and having some depth. The women were led as usual by
Megan Marvin, and
Sierra Bower had a great race with some super team tactics."
A native of Loveland, Colo., Schubert led three Paladins in the top-four of the men's 1,500-meters after posting a time of 3:48.53. Junior
Gabe Montague followed in third place in 3:50.92 and freshman
Chris Knight was fourth at 3:53.94. Freshman
Brayden Seymour rounded out the event in 14
th with a time of 4:05.68.
Marvin, a native of Chapel Hill, N.C., won the women's 800-meter finals for the third straight year after recording a time of 2:07.01. Sophomore
Camryn Wennersten was third in 2:09.19 and senior
Beth Donnelly seventh at 2:19.80.
The Paladins swept the 5,000-meter races with Ponder and Bower.
In the men's race, Ponder, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., secured his second individual title of the SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 14:3.15. Schubert added a third-place finish in 14:42.35 and freshman
Owen Shifflett was fourth with a 14:45.33. Junior
Casey Burr (15:14.17) and sophomore
Colton Kempney (15:26.28) completed the race in sixth and eighth places, respectively.
The women's 5,000-meters saw Furman capture the top three positions from Bower, who hails from Carbondale, Colo., junior
Lily Feingold, and senior
Bethany Graham. Bower's mark of 17:30.56 was over 20 seconds better than Feingold's second-place time of 17:51.99. Graham turned in an 18:02.17 to place third. Sophomore
Emma Jones recorded a fifth-place finish at 18:11.09. The Paladins have now won the women's 5,000-meters nine straight times dating back to 2015.
In the women's 1,500-meters, sophomore
Carly Wilkes and senior
Madelynne Cadeau crossed the finish line in the second and third. Wilkes tallied a time of 4:30.24 while Cadeau ran a 4:30.54. Sophomore
Clair Garrett was eighth at 4:41.30.
Junior
Matthew Smith earned a third-place finish in the men's 800-meter finals with his time of 1:50.33.
The women's 4x400-meter relay quartet of Marvin, Wennersten, Donnelly, and junior
Callie Harper closed out the meet placing sixth after combining for a time of 4:03.38.
Knight (1,500-meters), Shifflett (5,000-meters), Wennersten (800-meters), and Feingold (5,000-meters) were all named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team.
Host Samford captured both the men's and women's titles at the SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The men totaled 217 points and the women 212.5.
