Wade Powers Furman Past Davidson, 8-2; Game Two Suspended Due To Rain

DAVDISON, N.C. -- Reese Wade belted a three-run first inning home run and Furman added runs in both the second and third frames en route to an 8-2 victory over Davidson in game one of a scheduled Southern Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Game two, which was suspended due to rain in the top of the second inning with Furman leading 1-0, will be resumed Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Will Muzika and Will Miller contributed with 3-for-5, RBI performances, and Will Owens went 2-for-5 with a run scored in the 12-hit Furman attack.

Matt Plate (2-1), who came on in the fifth for starting pitcher Nate Smith, was credited with the win after woking 2 1/3 innings and allowing a run on two hits.  He walked three and struck out one.

Drake Browne tossed 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball in relief of Plate before turning it over to Kevin Gottlieb, who retired the Wildcats in order in the ninth.

Muzika's two-out single in the first was followed by Miller's single and Wade's three-run blast to right field off Davidson starting and losing pitcher Brian Russell, who then walked the bases loaded before getting an early hook.

The Paladins added two more in the second on an error and a Miller double to left field that plated Muzika. Furman finished off the early game outburst with a two-run third on RBI doubles by Aaron Thompkins and Muzika off the Wildcats' Ryan Overcash.

Nate Smith allowed a run on two hits before getting pulled after four innings.  He walked three and struck out seven.

Danny Weiss went 4-for-4 to lead Davidson, which managed only six hits.
