Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Hughston Armstrong belted a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift The Citadel to a 10-9 win over Furman in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Riley Park.
Armstrong's game deciding clout over the right field fence came off Paladin reliever Elliott Warford, who walked The Citadel's Eric Killgallen to begin the eighth inning with Furman leading 9-8. Pinch running for Kilgallen, Steven Hansen moved to second on a sacrifice before trotting home on the front end of Armstrong's blast, which came on a one ball, two strike pitch.
Skylar Hunter pitched around a two-out walk to get Furman in the ninth to nail down the win for The Citadel (18-25, 4-15 SoCon) and record his 10th save of the season.
Warford (2-3) was charged with his second straight loss, having absorbed the defeat in Friday's 5-4 series opening setback.
Furman (16-25, 6-10 SoCon) dropped to 2-10 in one-run games this year.
The Paladins trailed 8-6 before striking for three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-8 lead following a Griffin Davis sacrifice fly and two-out, two-run single to left field by Hunter Burton that scored Heath Burton and Jordan Simpson.
Brant Masters worked a scoreless seventh to maintain Furman's one-run lead before handing the ball to Warford to pitch the deciding eighth.
On the strength of an Alex Abrams two-run fourth inning home run, Furman staked starting pitcher Jacques de Gruy to a 4-1 lead before de Gruy walked the first two batters he faced in the fifth to set the table for a four-run fifth that gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead.
The Paladins went up 6-5 with two runs in the sixth, but the Bulldogs quickly answered with a three-spot in the bottom of frame, which began with Paladin reliever Billy Greenfield hitting Drew DeKerlegand with a pitch. The Bulldogs' bid for bigger inning was cut short by Masters, who induced a double play grounder off the bat of Bo Thompson.
Three of the four walks issued by Furman pitching scored, as did a hit batsman, and five of the Bulldogs' 10 runs came on two-out base hits.
The Paladins banged out 14 hits in the contest, with each starter scratching in the hit column. Heath Burton led the way, going 3-for-5 and scoring three runs. Hunter Burton and Jake Jones both collected two hits and two RBI, and Jordan Simpson had a pair of hits and scored twice.
Mason Davis led Citadel's 10-hit attack by going 3-for-5 and scoring three runs.
David Rivera (1-0) was credited the win following Armstrong's two-run eighth inning shot.
Sunday's series finale is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
