Winthrop Tops Furman, 8-6

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Grant English went 4-for-5, homered, and drove in three runs to lift Winthrop to an 8-6 victory over Furman in baseball action Tuesday evening at Latham Stadium.

The win snapped a four game losing skid by the Eagles (15-13) while the loss ended Furman's five-game winning streak.  The Paladins (10-17) play at Georgia State on Wednesday in a 6:00 p.m. game.

With the score tied 6-6, Spencer Yankle led off the ninth inning with a home run to left center field, and English capped his big performance with a one-out, RBI single to plate Hunter Lipscomb and put the Eagles up 8-6.

In the Furman ninth, Bret Hueber singled with one out, but a Banks Griffith line drive was gloved by Eagle second baseman Brandon Fite, who then collected a David Webel ground ball for the game's final out.

Winthrop never led in the game until the ninth despite banging out 17 hits against a pair of Furman pitchers.

The Paladins scored three times in the fourth inning to go up 5-2, but Winthrop battled back to tie it with three runs in the fifth.

Furman took a 6-5 lead in the sixth on the second of two Anthony Fontana sacrifice flies, only to see Winthrop knot it in the eighth on a Scout McFalls two-out single to left field that drove home Jake Sullivan.

McFalls, Yankle, and Sullivan each registered three hits for the Eagles.

The Paladins posted 10 hits, led by David Webel's 3-for-5 performance.

Forced to contend without two of its most productive players, outfielder Jabari Richards and first baseman John Michael Boswell, both of whom exited Saturday's 20-6 win over The Citadel due to injuries, the Paladins' took another hit when catcher Dax Roper exit the contest after being hit by a pitch in the third inning.

Richards, who homered twice in last Tuesday's 18-3 win over Winthrop in Rock Hill, on Monday was named SoCon Player of the Week and Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week.  Roper, meanwhile, had gone 11-for-20 with three home runs in Furman's five-game winning streak.

Furman stranded 13 runners in the contest.

The beneficiary of Winthrop's two-run ninth was Colten Rendon (3-2), who earned the victory after pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.

Nike Verbeke (0-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Paladin starting pitcher Matt Lazzaro was tagged for five runs on 12 hits over 6 2/3 innings.  He did not walk a batter and struck out two.
