Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- MJ Sasapan's two-out single in the 11th inning scored Banks Griffith from third base to give Furman a 4-3 victory over Georgia State in Wednesday baseball action at Latham Stadium.
The win, the fifth in the last six games for Furman (17-24) and second extra inning triumph for the Paladins in consecutive nights, represented Furman's fifth victory in its final turn at the plate this season. It also earned the Paladins the season split with Georgia State (12-30).
In the decisive 11th, Griffith drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a groundout. Sasapan, who entered the game as a pinch hitter for designate hitter Trent Alley in the 10th, bounced a one-strike offering from Panther closer Brandon Bell (0-2) up the middle into center field to plate Griffith.
Sasapan's hit made a winner of Hank Nichols (2-0), who earned his first victory in Tuesday's 5-4 win over USC Upstate. The junior left-hander struck out a pair of batters in the top of the 11th, stranding the potential go-ahead run at third base.
Furrman led 3-0 after two innings before Georgia State cut the advantage to 3-2 on a Luke Leonard two-out, two-run home run to left field in the fifth off Furman freshman pitcher Mason Kenney, who was making his collegiate starting debut. He allowed two runs on three hits over five innings while recording three strikeouts.
Kenney's replacement, Nik Verbeke, also hurled five strong innings, walking one and striking out three. The only run he allowed came in the ninth when the Panthers combined two hits with an error that allowed Griffin Cheney to score the game tying run.
The Paladins finished with 10 hits and the Panthers eight.
Georgia State reliever Brendon Case, who entered the contest with a 17.05 ERA, blanked Furman over 6 2/3 innings, surrendering six hits and a walk while striking out four.
Furman opens a three-game series versus Kansas on Friday.
