Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- David Dunlavey pitched a complete game, two-hitter in leading Furman to a 3-0 shutout of Kansas in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
Dunlavey (3-7) no-hit the Jayhawks over the 6 2/3 innings before Benjamin Sems singled up the middle in the seventh. Kansas registered its second hit with two outs in the ninth, but Dunlavey closed out the one-hour, 55 minute contest by retiring Nolan Metcalf on a fly ball to center field.
The redshirt junior right-hander from Spartanburg, S.C., walked one, hit one batter, and struck out nine in his masterpiece. He threw 125 pitches and 80 strikes.
The win evened the series at a game apiece heading into Sunday's noon finale.
Winners of six of its last eight games, Furman (18-25) gave Dunlavey all the runs he would need in the first inning after Jabari Richards drew a one-out walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error before coming home on Sterling Turmon's line drive single to right field.
The Paladins made it 2-0 in the second when Jared Mihalik led off with a walk and scored on a wild pitch.
After hitting the Jayhawks' Rudy Karre to lead off the game, Dunlavey retired 17 of the next 18 batters he faced before James Costentino drew a two-out walk in the sixth. Sems broke up the no-hit bid with a single on a two-out, two-ball, two-strike offering from Dunlavey in the seventh.
Furman plated their third run in the seventh after Jordan Starkes tripled into the right field corner and scored on Bret Huebner's bunt single.
The Paladins finished with seven hits, getting a 2-for-3 performance from Huebner.
Kansas starter Ryan Cyar (2-6) took the loss after going the distance. He allowed all three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six.
The complete game shutout was the first by a Paladin pitcher since Will Gaddis blanked East Tennessee State, 3-0, in Southern Conference Tournament first round action on May 25, 2016.
