Furman Edges UNCG, 4-3, To Open SoCon Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Furman edged UNC Greensboro, 4-3, Saturday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, N.C.  

The Paladins scored the first four points to secure the win.  In doubles action, Furman claimed victories at the top two flights to take the point.  Seniors Jake Munns and Jake Bhangdia, who rank 26th nationally, defeated Nico Grewe and Ollie Palmer, 6-3, in the top-seeded contest, and senior Clarke Wilson and junior Henrik Atlevi blew past Alexander Zuckerman and Roger Rogowski, 6-2, at number two.  The Spartans took the victory at flight three, with Hugh Knapp and Jack Burkill slipping past junior Drew Singerman and sophomore James Roelofse, 6-4. 

Furman won three singles matches in straight sets.  Wilson defeated Knapp, 6-0, 6-2, at flight two, and Bhangdia recorded a 6-3, 6-1 advantage over Rogoswki at number three.  In the flight six match up, Roelofse topped Burkill, 6-1, 6-3.

The Spartans (1-1, 0-1 SoCon) took the last three points, winning all three matches in three sets.  Palmer held off Munns, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, in the top-seeded contest, and Grewe came from behind to beat Singerman, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, at flight four.  At number five, Zuckerman notched a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, victory over Atlevi. 

Furman (5-3, 1-0 SoCon) will play at Charlotte Sunday at 2 p.m.
