RICHMOND, KY. -- Furman's Ryan Adams won the 1,500m, and senior Jake Ogden and freshman Bethany Graham each took gold in the 5,000m to lead the Furman track and field teams Saturday at the Rick Erdmann Twilight meet on the campus of Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Ky.
A senior from Hudson, Ohio, Adams posted a time of 3:37.82 for gold after being paced to a 1:42.48 split at the 750m mark by junior Cameron Ponder. Adams, who set the previous program record of 3:38.29 last weekend at the Joe Walker Invitational, ranks fifth on the NCAA East Preliminaries qualifying list in the event. Freshman Carson Williams finished 15th with a time of 3:51.35, and sophomore Nick Epstein was 17th with a personal record of 3:50.87.
A native of Dana Point, Calif., Ogden, who posted a time of 13:57.50, took over 30 seconds off his previous best and led a group of five Paladins among the top seven in the men's 5,000m. Senior Daniel Bernal placed third with a personal record 14:00.16, followed by senior Mason Coppi in fourth at 14:03.33. Freshman Dylan Schubert turned in a personal-best time of 14:07.37 for sixth place, and sophomore David Ahlmeyer was seventh with a personal best of 14:09.56. Â
Five additional Paladins finished in the top 26 in the men's 5,000m, including senior Trent Mandato in 20th place with a personal record of 14:29.07 and sophomore Ares Reading in 21st at 14:29.64. Junior Noah Dolhare tallied a time of 14:30.31 for 22nd place, and freshman Andrew Hammel finished 25th with a personal record of 14:33.23. Sophomore Adam Beucler was 26th with a time of 14:33.31. Â
Graham, a freshman from Aldie, Va., recorded a personal-record time of 15:57.92 for the women's 5,000m victory, knocking over 12 seconds off her previous personal best and becoming just the fifth woman in Furman history and the first Paladin freshman to break the 16:00 mark, joining graduates Allie Buchalski, Savannah Carnahan, and Emma Grace Hurley and current senior Gabbi Jennings. Graham's time currently ranks 14th on the NCAA East Preliminaries qualifying slate. Freshman Kylie Wittman posted a personal-best time of 17:16.96 for 21st, and freshman Emily Little was 24th with a time of 17:23.08.
Freshman Beth Donnelly finished 11th in the 1,500m with a personal-best time of 4:28.21 followed by freshman Megan Marvin in 12th with a personal-best time of 4:28.72. Senior Emma Kuntz placed 15th with a time of 4:31.09.Â
Additional Furman track and field athletes competed at the USC Open in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday. Sophomore Josh Powers placed fourth in the 1,500m at 3:57.55, while freshman Spencer Tate took 12th with a personal best of 4:02.09, followed by sophomore Mac Roberts in 13th with a personal best time of 4:02.65. Sophomore Jonah Dill notched two personal records, taking 19th in the 400m hurdles (55.82) and 20th in the 110m high hurdles (15.25). On the women's side, sophomore Caroline Nguyen took 17th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:11.04.Â
Select members of the Paladin team will compete at the Drake Relays, which will be held April 22-24, in Des Moines, Iowa.
