Furman Completes Sweep Of The Citadel, 7-2

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- David Dunlavey pitched six shutout innings and Jordan Starkes delivered a three-run triple in a five-run sixth that helped carry Furman to a 7-2 victory over The Citadel in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Latham Stadium.

The win, the fourth straight for Furman (10-16, 3-3 SoCon), completed the three-game series sweep for the Paladins and marked the 11th triumph in the last 12 meetings with The Citadel (9-19, 2-4 SoCon).

Dunlavey (2-5), who pitched effectively but took losses while getting just one run of support in his last two starts against the College of Charleston and Samford, fared better today, blanking the Bulldogs over six frames with the help of six strikeouts.

Dunlavey picked off the Bulldogs' Wes Lane in the second after a one-out double, stranded two runners in the fourth, and left the bases full in the fifth after striking out Bryce Leasure looking.

He exited the game with a 1-0 lead and got the benefit of a five-run Paladin outburst in the bottom of the sixth, aided by a two-out Citadel throwing error followed by a Jordan Starkes bases loaded triple to right center field that gave Furman a 6-0 lead.

Sterling Turmon's long, solo home run over the right field wall, his fifth of the season, in the seventh stretched the Paladins' advantage to 7-0.

The Bulldogs avoided the shutout in the ninth with a two-out, two-run home by Ben Peden off Paladin reliever Jordan Beatson, who pitched the final three innings to collect his second save of the campaign.

The loss was charged to The Citadel starting pitcher Dylan Spence (2-2), who surrendered six runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits over six innings.  He walked two and fanned five.

Both teams registered nine hits.  Dax Roper and Brett Huebner had two apiece for Furman.

The Paladins play host to Winthrop on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
