Furman Home Stand Continues Friday Versus Campbell

Logan Taplett
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman's extended early season home stand continues this weekend when the Paladins welcome Campbell to Latham Stadium for a three-game series beginning with Friday's 4:00 p.m. opener.

Saturday's game is slated for 1:00 p.m., as is Sunday's series finale.

All three games will be live streamed via the SoCon Digital Network.  In addition, the contests will be broadcast over Fox Sports 1440 AM and Furman campus station WPLS 95.9 FM, as well as audio streamed via FurmanPaladins.com and Tune-In.com with Dan Scott, "The Voice of the Paladins," on the call.    Fans can also follow live stats via FurmanPaladins.com.

Furman holds a slim 3-2 lead in its series with Campbell, having last faced the Camels in 1996 (5-4 win in Greenville).

The Paladins (6-7), in the midst of a 20-game home stand, halted a modest four-game losing streak on Wednesday by defeating UNC Asheville, 8-5.

Campbell (5-7) has lost three straight, but the Camels have faced an early season slate featuring a three-game series against No. 23 South Alabama and matchups against No. 16 East Carolina and eighth-ranked Duke.

Expected to get the starting nod for the Paladins in Friday's opener is freshman right-hander Stone Simmons (0-2, 2.12 ERA), followed by redshirt junior left-hander John Michael Bertrand (2-1, 2.00 ERA) on Saturday and sophomore right-hander Rob Hughes (1-1, 4.50 ERA) on Sunday.

Simmons allowed only one run on three hits while striking out eight over seven innings in his last start, an eventual 5-1 loss Fordham.

Furman, which has struggled offensively this year and tallied just eight total runs in its four games prior to Wednesday's victory over UNC Asheville, banged out 12 hits in the win over Bulldogs to raise its team batting average to .230.

Junior outfielder David Webel (.355, 0 HR, 7 RBI), who had three hits and drove in four runs against UNC Asheville, and sophomore outfielder Jordan Starkes (.354, 1 HR, 9 RBI) lead the Paladins at the plate.

The Paladins got a pair of solid pitching outings from freshman right-handers Matthew Marchal and Gavin Scott in the victory over UNC Asheville, with the two newcomers combining to hurl 6 1/3 innings surrendering just two runs, one earned, while fanning six.
