NASHVILLE, TENN. -- Junior Cameron Ponder recorded his second sub-4:00 mile of the indoor track and field season, and the freshmen led the Paladin women Friday in the opening day of the Music City Challenge at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility in Nashville, Tenn.
Ponder, who also recorded a sub-4:00 mile at the Samford Invite to open the season, placed sixth with a time of 3:59.76, marking the 21st sub-4:00 mile under Paladin head coach Robert Gary. Senior Aaron Wier was seventh in the event at 4:02.18, and freshman Carson Williams placed 14th with a time of 4:08.12. Sophomore Nick Epstein crossed the line in 4:12.70 for 22nd place, and sophomore Mac Roberts took 29th place at 4:16.97.
Three rookies competed in the women's 5,000m, led by Madelynne Cadeau, who placed seventh with a time of 16:29.07. Jonna Strange recorded a time of 16:33.53 for 10th place, and Emily Little finished 13th at 16:51.96.
Freshman Beth Donnelly led five Furman runners in the mile, placing 13th with a time of 4:49.79. Sophomore Nicole Matysik finished 18th at 4:54.00, and senior Emma Kuntz was 20th with a time of 4:56.27. Freshman Megan Marvin recorded a time of 5:01.80 for 27th place, and rookie Kylie Wittman was 33rd at 5:09.95. Sophomore Caroline Nguyen posted a time of 28.69 to take 11th place in the 200m.
Sophomore Ares Reading spearheaded a group of seven Paladins in the men's 5,000m, finishing seventh with a time of 14:05.78. He was followed by senior Daniel Bernal in eighth place at 14:07.57. Junior Noah Dolhare placed 11th with a time of 14:16.66, followed by sophomore Adam Beucler in 12th at 14:19.31. Senior Mason Coppi crossed the line in 14:26.27 for 16th place, and senior Trenton Mandato was 17th with a time of 14:33.01. Freshman Andrew Hammel posted a time of 14:39.56 for 19th place.
Sophomore Evin McEntee turned in a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 20-4.50 (6.21m), and freshman Adrian Gonzalez finished 11th with a time of 24.04 in the 200m.
The meet concludes on Saturday, when Furman will compete in the 60m, 400m, 800m, 3,000m, and the men's triple jump.
